Mississippi Healthcare Executives annual meeting set for March

The Mississippi Healthcare Executives annual meeting will be hosted at the Hilton Hotel, County Line Road, Jackson, MS on March 10-11, 2011. Please be sure to make hotel reservations by calling 800-445-8667. The MHA room block rate is $114.00.

ACHE Category I Topic: Inside the Physician Mind

ACHE Category I credit is available during the Mississippi Hospital Association's annual Leadership Conference. The seminar is set for June 24 at the Beau Rivage in Biloxi 

Dr. Joseph Bujak will provide an insider’s perspective on the beliefs and behaviors of physicians. His insight will provoke you to question you assumptions and break through the barriers that may be keeping you from forming productive relationships with the physicians in your organization. He also provides suggestions for using your new understanding to influence physician behavior and promote enduring partnerships.

With candor and wit, Dr. Bujak shares the wisdom he has developed through his years of experience as both a physician and an administrator:

• A physician’s sense of time is very different from that of an administrator
• Being chief of staff is the equivalent of drawing the short straw
• A physician’s definition of teamwork is like the game of golf
• Traditional medical staff organization is not the vehicle for developing relationships with physicians
• A good role model for influencing physician behavior is the old TV character Columbo
• You should approach change using the metaphor of moving a Slinky
• Gen-X physicians differ greatly from traditionalist, or Baby Boomer, physicians; propositions acceptable to Xers will be rejected by the other and vice versa.

Joseph Bujak, MD, FACP currently serves as Vice-President of Medical Affairs for Kootenai Medical Center, in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, where he has organizational responsibility for performance improvement and outcomes measurement. He focuses on the reorganization of the provider community and the redesign of healthcare delivery. He appreciates the impact of changing medical economics on the provider community, understands the use of information in support of clinical process improvement, and applies the theories of systems thinking and complexity science to leadership and management in health care.

Dr. Bujak believes that future success requires the capacity to know how to initiate and manage transformational change and the ability to align incentives around proper measurement. Creating context, emphasizing relationships, distinguishing substance from form, and sharing purpose and principles are the keys to becoming the successful architect of your own future.

His past experiences in clinical research, medical education, primary and specialty medical practice, and administration give him a unique breadth of perspective and help establish credibility with the many constituencies within the provider community. Dr. Bujak graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Rutgers University . He received his medical degree from the University of Rochester where he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha.

ACHE Enrollment Opportunity

On behalf of Fred Hood, President of the Mississippi Healthcare Executives, an Independent Chapter of the American Chapter of Healthcare Executives.

Dear Colleagues and ACHE Chapter Members,

As you are aware, ACHE is transitioning into a new chapter eligibility/membership format. Currently, the Mississippi Chapter favors what is referred to as the "hybrid model," and this model allows chapters to include in their membership individuals who are not affiliated with ACHE in any classification.

In July, ACHE will e-mail a special online membership offer to chapter members who are not ACHE affiliates. Under the terms of the special online offer, chapter members who are not ACHE affiliates will be able to join ACHE for $150, and this will cover both 2007 and 2008 dues. They will not need to pay ACHE dues again until 2009!

This offer will be available only to chapter members who are eligible to join ACHE but have never been an ACHE affiliate and to chapter members who are former ACHE affiliates (with the exception of affiliates who were suspended in 2007).

I believe that the future of our chapter's strength is tied directly to our continued growth in ACHE-affiliated chapter members. If you are a chapter member but NOT an ACHE member, I encourage you to seriously consider taking advantage of this ACHE membership offer.
