Rebecca Wiley, associate director of the G.V. (Sonny) Montgomery VA Medical Center, has been named director of the Augusta VA Medical Center in Georgia, effective February 18, 2007.
The Augusta VA Medical Center, a two-division medical center, provides tertiary care in medicine, surgery, neurology, psychiatry, rehabilitation medicine, and spinal cord injury. The Downtown Division has 155 beds and the Uptown Division has 285 beds. Additionally, the medical center has two community based outpatient clinics in Athens, Ga. and Aiken, S.C. The Augusta VA Medical Center has more than 2,000 employees, 140 medical students from the Medical College of Georgia and 800 other students rotating for training. The medical center is a leader in research with 50 principal investigators working 126 research projects. The Augusta VAMC has the only active rehabilitation unit for treatment of active military personnel in the VA system. In 2006, the medical center was awarded the prestigious Robert Carey Award for Excellence in Healthcare.
In 2006, Wiley led the Jackson VA Medical Center as acting director during the one of the worst natural disasters to ever hit the nation. During that period, Wiley played a key role in VA’s response to Hurricane Katrina as she directed efforts from VA’s nearest hospital not directly affected by that killer storm. Prior to her work in Jackson, Wiley served as Deputy Director for VA’s Capital Asset Realignment for Enhanced Services (CARES) Commission. In that position, she played a key role as VA developed its blue print for how it will care for tomorrow’s veterans in future decades.
Wiley received an undergraduate degree in nursing from the University of Iowa and a graduate degree in public health from the Indiana University. She has received numerous awards, including the VA Secretary’s Award for Exceptional Service for her work on the CARES Commission and numerous awards for her leadership during Hurricane Katrina. Wiley’s family includes a son who is a student at the University of Georgia and a daughter who in high school. Wiley is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Arnaman of rural Grinnell, Iowa.
