Forrest General Hospital and Turtle Creek Mall’s Spirit Girls, a program of Forrest General’s Spirit of Women, spread Christmas cheer this holiday season by providing gifts for underprivileged youth in the area. The Salvation Army enlisted the help of the teens to support their annual Angel Tree program.
Angel Tree is an annual Christmas project of the Salvation Army that helps provide Christmas gifts to children of qualifying families. Families are required to complete a rigorous application and justify their financial need with proof of income and expenses. Those who qualify are then asked to submit the clothes and shoe sizes of each child, and each child is allowed to request a special toy. The child’s first name, sizes and requests are placed on special Angel Tree cards, which are then distributed throughout the community.
“This program is a great hands-on way for people to help others in their own community,” said Major Mark Satterlee of the Salvation Army. “They know when they bring the gift to us, it is going straight to the people who need them. This year we asked the Spirit Girls to help, and many participated. The girls went the extra mile for these kids by providing clothes, shoes and toys,” said Satterlee.
