Karon Stuart, massage therapist for the Spa at St. Dominic’s, has received a certification in Manual Lymph Drainage Therapy from the Peregrine Institute of Oncology Massage Training in Sante Fe, NM.
Manual Lymph Drainage Therapy is a gentle, light touch, non-invasive technique in which the massage therapist applies light pressure to target areas. This additional modality within the massage treatment allows fluid to move to healthy lymph nodes. This technique can relieve swelling and pain after operations and helps counter bruising.
Stuart says her new skill and training in Manual Lymph Drainage Therapy will help cancer patients, post-operative patients and those who simply seek relaxation. “This technique has many benefits. It helps with the pain and it gives the patient a sense of well-being.”
Suzie Foote, RN, BSN, CSS, HT1, Health Path Coordinator for the Spa at St. Dominic’s, feels Stuart’s certification will allow her to offer exceptional care to those clients going through the cancer treatment experience.
“Being on the table for one hour with a highly skilled massage therapist gives our clients a break from worries and problems and allows the body to truly relax. We want to do all we can to assist clients in the healing process,” said Foote.
The Spa at St. Dominic’s will also host the American Holistic Nurses Association (AHNA) network meetings for the state of Mississippi. Foote will serve as the AHNA Network Leader and will arrange the meetings and assist a holistic community in its development. “The Spa at St. Dominic’s incorporates the holistic approach to all of our services. We treat all of our clients as a whole person, mind, body and soul,” said Foote.
