Hardy Middle School’s main entrance was recently updated after volunteers from St. Dominic Hospital, Pinelake Church and school employees cleaned and painted the entrance and built a planter in front of the school.
The entrance revitalization is just one of many projects St. Dominic’s has completed over the last 29 years as a partner in education with Hardy Middle School.
In addition to keeping the school beautiful, many St. Dominic’s employees also participate in a Book Buddy program at Hardy Middle School, which is aimed at building students’ interest in reading and helping them to become more proficient readers.
In the Book Buddy program, one student who is selected by the principal is partnered with one Book Buddy for the entire school year in order to build an ongoing relationship.
Keith Buchanan, St. Dominic’s director of business development and Book Buddy, said the program has been a success and helps students build confidence. “Through the Book Buddy program, students get an opportunity to develop a friendship with someone outside of their school and community who can help them discover opportunities and fresh, new possibilities for their life and future,” he said.
St. Dominic’s also provides first aid supplies to the school and offers free on-site health screenings for teachers and parents. Teachers are also honored at two lunches throughout the year.
St. Dominic’s encourages role modeling by treating honor roll students to a special lunch off campus and sponsoring students to attend community and national events such as Fellowship of Christian Athletes, 100 Black Men and the annual Youth Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C.
