Mississippi State Hospital recognizes employees with decades of service

Mississippi State Hospital recently honored employees with May anniversary dates for their years of service. Several employees were recognized for multiple decades of service to the hospital.

Two employees were honored for three decades or more.

Annie McAfee of Brandon has worked at MSH for 35 years. She works in the Community Services Division of the hospital.

Earnest Myers of Brandon was recognized for providing 30 years of service. Myers works in the Maintenance Department. 

Two others were recognized for providing 25 years of service to MSH.  

Jenette Thomas, of Canton, works in the Inpatient Services Division.

Kenneth Dixon, of Jackson, is a property officer in the Fiscal Services Division of MSH. 

Linda McLaurin of Brandon was also recognized for providing 20 years of service. McLaurin is an Active Treatment Technician at Mississippi State Hospital. 

Service Awards are given to employees in the month of their date of hire, beginning with their first year and followed by every fifth anniversary year. Employees receive a Certificate of Appreciation and a Service Award Pin. The program is sponsored by Friends of Mississippi State Hospital Inc.

Dixon graduates from Basic Supervisory Course

Mississippi State Hospital recently recognized Sophia Dixon of Jackson for completing the Mississippi State Personnel Board’s Basic Supervisory Course.

A native of Jackson, Dixon is an administrative assistant in the Fiscal Services Division of Mississippi State Hospital. She has been employed there for 16 years.

The Basic Supervisory Course consists of training designed to provide information and skill development to supervisors on the fundamentals of supervising people and programs in government. It provides an orientation to managing in government through a broad array of lecture, group activities, and individual and small-group interactions.

Mississippi State Hospital names May Employees of the Month

Mississippi State Hospital has named Christopher Thomas and Melita Breeden as its May Employees of the Month.

Thomas, of Brookhaven, Miss., has been named Mississippi State Hospital’s (MSH) May Employee of the Month for Support Services. A McCall Creek native, he works as a System Administrator at the hospital. He has been employed there for three years. 

Breeden, of Newhebron, Miss., has been named MSH May Employee of the Month for Clinical Service. Breeden, a Newhebron native, is an academic teacher in the Community Services Division at Mississippi State Hospital. 

The MSH Employee of the Month award recognizes employees who have made outstanding contributions to the hospital through their work. The program is sponsored by Friends of Mississippi State Hospital Inc.

Dr. Robert Maddux named clinical director at Mississippi State Hospital

Mississippi State Hospital (MSH) has named Dr. Robert Maddux as clinical director, a role in which he will act as chief psychiatrist and administrator of psychiatric and medical care for the facility. 

A native of Batesville, Miss., Maddux has been serving as a psychiatrist at MSH since 2008. As clinical director, he is succeeding Dr. Lydia Weisser, who will continue to serve as a psychiatrist at the hospital in addition to her duties as medical director for the Mississippi Department of Mental Health.

Dr. Maddux has experience in both the private and public sectors, having previously practiced at Mississippi State Hospital from 1984 to 1992. He stayed in private practice from 1992 to 2008. His career has included practice at Millcreek Behavior Health Services, at which he also served as medical director.

After returning to MSH four years ago, he served on Oak Circle Center, the hospital’s child and adolescent unit. He also served for a brief time as interim medical director at Specialized Treatment Facility in Gulfport. He is a 1974 graduate of Millsaps College, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in biology, and a 1983 graduate of the University of Mississippi Medical Center.

“The thing that has always attracted me to psychiatry is that it, maybe more than any other specialty in medicine, demands that you understand your patient as a whole individual,” Maddux said. “I was always interested in my patients as individuals when I was in medical school, and that’s still an important part of medicine.”

Mississippi State Hospital Director James G. Chastain expressed his thanks to Dr. Weisser for her service, and said the hospital was fortunate to have someone succeeding her as experienced as Dr. Maddux, who has been able to develop relationships with members of hospital staff, stakeholders, and providers in the community.

“As Dr. Maddux assumes the duties of Clinical Director, I am confident we will continue to achieve many accomplishments and improvements in care under his leadership,” Chastain said.

Mississippi State Hospital names April employees of the month

Mississippi State Hospital has named three employees as its April Employees of the Month, one from each of the hospital's three service areas.  

Stephanie Oscar from Canton, Miss. has been named Mississippi State Hospital’s (MSH) April Employee of the Month for Support Services.  Laura Drain of Jackson has been named April Employee of the Month for Direct Care Service. Evelyn Harrison of Brandon is the April Employee of the Month for Clinical Service.  

Oscar is an administrative assistant who has been employed at MSH for 14 years.

Drain has been employed in the Inpatient Services Division of MSH for 16 years.

Harrison is a medical technologist at the hospital's medical/surgical clinic.

MSH employees graduate from basic supervisory course

Mississippi State Hospital recently recognized several employees for completing the Mississippi State Personnel Board’s Basic Supervisory Course.

Mississippi State Hospital recognizes employees with decades of service

Mississippi State Hospital recently honored employees with April anniversary dates for their years of service. 

Clifton Perkins of Ridgeland was recognized for providing 30 years of service. Perkins works in the Inpatient Services Division of Mississippi State Hospital.

Also honored was Deborah Parks of Canton.  Parks was recognized for providing 25 years of service. Parks is a Personnel Officer at the hospital.

Service Awards are given to employees in the month of their date of hire, beginning with one year and every fifth anniversary year following. Employees receive a Certificate of Appreciation and a Service Award Pin. The program is sponsored by Friends of Mississippi State Hospital Inc.

 

Mississippi State Hospital names March Employees of the Month

Mississippi State Hospital has named its employees of the month for March, one from each of the hospital's three service divisions. Ronald Hodge of Jackson has been named Direct Care Service employee of the month, Jerry Thrash from Pearl has been named employee of the month for Clinical Service, and Joseph Bilbro from Pearl is the hospital's employee of the month for Support Services.  

Hodge is a vocational training instructor at Opportunity House, a part of the hospital’s Community Services Division.  He has been employed at the hospital for six years and is a veteran of the United States Air Force.  

Thrash is a registered nurse at Jaquith Nursing Home, located on the hospital campus.  He has been employed there for 16 years.

Bilbro works in the Housekeeping Department, where he has been employed for three years.

Mississippi State Hospital recently honored employees with March anniversary dates for their years of service.Jay Calaham and Cora Mae Ford of Jackson were both recognized for providing 20 years of service.

Calaham is a licensed practical nurse at Mississippi State Hospital.

Ford is a direct care supervisor.   

Service Awards are given to employees in the month of their date of hire, beginning with five years and every fifth year following. Employees receive a Certificate of Appreciation and a Service Award Pin. The program is sponsored by Friends of Mississippi State Hospital Inc.
