On Wednesday, Nov. 11, the Mississippi Hospital Association, in conjunction with Balch & Bingham LLP, will host a webinar on Health & Human Services’ HIPAA Breach Notification Rules from 10 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. The webinar is tailored for HIT, CEOs, CFOs, compliance officers, security officers, legal counsel, patient safety directors, education, and CNOs.
The HIPAA breach notification rules became effective September 23, 2009. The rules impact HIPAA covered entities and their business associates, requiring covered entities to send notices of certain breaches of unsecured protected health information to the affected individuals potentially to the Secretary of HHS and/or the media. The HHS breach Notification Rules also require business associates to notify covered entities of potential breaches.
This webinar will cover how HHS’s HIPAA Breach Notification Rules will impact your operations. You will receive practice pointers and discuss best practices to improve and support your HIPAA privacy and security programs.
Objectives:
• Help participants familiarize themselves with requirements for breach notification and understand how the Breach Notification Rules will impact their operations;
• Advise participants of steps to take to come into compliance with the Breach Notification Rules ; and
• Discuss best practice and communicate the importance of training workforce members to improve and support HIPAA privacy and security programs.

Speakers:
Dinetia Newman is a partner in the Health Law Practice Group and the Business Section in the Jackson Office. Her practice involves representation of providers and suppliers including hospitals and health systems, physicians, ambulatory surgical centers and other Medicare Part B suppliers on a variety of operational and transactional matters involving Medicare and Medicaid payment, Anti-kickback Act, Stark Law, EMTALA, HIPAA privacy and security compliance, state law licensure and certificate of need issues, contractual negotiations between and among providers and suppliers, establishing and representing managed care organizations and counseling clients through investigations by federal and state agencies. In addition to practicing law, Dinetia taught as adjunct professor in health law during the 1994 and 1997 summer sessions at the University Of Mississippi School Of Law.
Richard D. Sanders is a Partner in Balch & Bingham's Atlanta office and directs the Healthcare Practice Group in Atlanta. Rich represents a variety of healthcare providers and managed care organizations on a broad range of issues including fraud and abuse compliance, antitrust policy, physician self referral management, medical staff credentialing, Medicare reimbursement, legislative activities, and business transactions. He also represents providers and managed care organizations in their relationships with regulatory agencies, including state Medicaid, insurance, and health departments, as well as the U.S. Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Rich regularly speaks to a variety of groups on topics including HIPAA, medical staff credentialing, Medicare fraud and abuse, and antitrust. In addition, Rich is on the adjunct faculty at the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University and teaches courses in healthcare law.
