Annual spending for mental health and substance abuse treatment is projected to nearly double between 2003 and 2014, to $238.7 billion, according to a study published online Oct. 7 by Health Affairs. However, that represents a small and declining share of total health spending. “Spending on prescription drugs drives mental health spending, and is expected to be responsible for 37% of the increase in overall mental health spending between 2003 and 2014,” the authors add.
