
Data from 11 countries, published in the Archives of General Psychiatry, showed the lifetime rate of bipolar disorder was highest in the U.S. at 4.4% and lowest in India at 0.1%, which experts say could be attributed to several factors, including genetics, cultural awareness and stigma and social structures. The study also found that regardless of region or country, people with the disorder exhibited similar symptoms and usually had other mental health problems such as anxiety disorder.
