State Sen. Tommy Gollott, who has served in the Mississippi Legislature for 40 years as a Democrat, will seek re-election this fall as a Republican. He filed papers recently with the Mississippi Republican Party to qualify as the Republican nominee for State Senate District 50.
Gollott said he made his decision to switch because of the threat by the State Executive Committee of the Mississippi Democratic Party to decertify any nominee who has supported a Republican in the past.
Elected to the Mississippi Legislature in 1967, Gollott is the longest serving member. State Senate District 50, which Gollott represents, covers Biloxi, D'Iberville and other areas of Harrison County.
