Gov. Haley Barbour will play a key role in Medicaid reform nationwide. He was named the 2005-2006 chairman of the National Governors Association's Health and Human Services Committee.
Medicaid and CHIP are among the top issues for his committee in the coming year. Barbour, who previously served as vice chairman, was selected at the NGA annual meeting in Des Moines, Iowa.
“Unfortunately, there are over 45 million people lacking effective health insurance in the United States today and for many who do have insurance, the quality of their health care needs to be improved,” Governor Barbour said. “Our meeting in Des Moines allowed governors to discuss this important issue and map out potential solutions.”
Governor Barbour and Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm also serve as members of Medicaid Reform Working Group. These two governors along with the nine-member NGA Executive Committee comprise this group.
