MHA hosting revenue cycle two-day workshop in September

Despite many years of revenue cycle management activities, healthcare providers continue to struggle to preserve consistent positive results. Day-to-day revenue cycle processes are critical to a hospital’s strategic effort to obtain accurate reimbursement and manage cash flow. It is difficult to find extra hours to address problems and situations that may arise without a practical plan that has the greatest impact on the bottom line and the integrity of what is reported to external agencies.

The Mississippi Hospital Association is hosting a two-day workshop, Taking Charge of the Revenue Cycle, on Sept. 25-26 at the MHA Conference Center in Madison. The program is designed to focus on the processes and practices that address the touch points of the revenue cycle with the greatest opportunity for improvement, to look at the real importance of accurate documentation, to understand the effects of placing the emphasis on “upstream” versus “downstream” activities, to key claims submissions and recovery strategies, and to understand what value based purchasing really means to the organization.

Leadership Conference Offered Fun, Education, Fellowship For All

Over 380 people attended MHA’s 81st Annual Leadership Conference in Point Clear, Ala., held June 7-8 at the Grand Marriott Resort. The conference offered leaders a roadmap of health care at the crossroads. (For all the pics from the conference, click here. In addition to the educational and social opportunities, the conference also recognized individuals for outstanding work in the health care field.  

Harry C. Frye, MD, Chairman of the Board at Beacham Memorial Hospital in Magnolia, was recognized as the MHA Distinguished Trustee of the Year. The award was developed in 1996 to recognize exemplary, dedicated service in hospital governance.  This year marks Dr. Frye's 60th year of practicing medicine. He still rounds at the hospital daily.

Honorary members for 2012 were also named during the conference: Arthur C. (Sonny) Kelly of OCH Regional Medical Center, Gerald D. Wages of North Mississippi Health Services, Sister Dorothea Sondgeroth of St. Dominic Health Services, Kurt W. Metzner of Mississippi Baptist Health System, Davis Richards of Health Management Associates, and Wynona Winfield of South Mississippi State Hospital.

During the Leadership Conference, Claude Harbarger, president of St. Dominic Health Systems in Jackson, was named Chairman of the MHA Board of Governors and MHA Solutions.  MHA and MHA Solutions 2012-2013 board members were also named.

Lester K. Diamond, FACHE, President/Chief Executive Officer of St. Dominic Hospital, was selected as the recipient of the American College of Healthcare Executives Senior-Level Healthcare Executive Regent's Award. He received his graduate degreen in healthcare administration from the University of Mississippi and has been with St. Dominic's since 1992.

Chip Denton, CEO of Grenada Lake Medical Center, was presented with the American Hospital Association Grassroots Champion Award.  He was recognized for his exceptional leadership in garnering grassroots and community support for Mississippi hospitals.  

The MHAPAC gave two Most Valuable PAC Player Awards:  the Hospital Award was presented to St. Dominic- Jackson Memorial Hospital and the Individual Award went to Fred Hood of Pontotoc Health System. During an MHAPAC Breakfast, 2011 Leaders of the PAC were recognized.

During the conference, the MHAPAC held two significant fundraisers, which included the breakfast and a silent auction. Over $15,000 was raised during the events. Nominations now be accepted for 2012 MHA Distinguished Hospital Trustee Award

It's time! Nominations are now being accepted for MHA's 2012 Distinguished Hospital Trustee Award.

This prestigious award is given to an individual who has demonstrated significant contributionsin the field of hospital governance over a sustained period of time. The nominee must be anactive member of a hospital board or hospital corporate board that holds current membership inthe Mississippi Hospital Association.

A selection committee appointed by the Chairman of the MHA Board of Governors will determine the recipient. Hospital Board Chairmen, other trustees, or hospital chief executive officers may make nominations.

This award is given each year at the MHA Annual Leadership Conference. The Trustee of the Year will be featured in a video presentation which will be shown during the awards presentation.

The 2011 Award recipientwas William L. “Bill” Eubank, Jr., from Mississippi Baptist Health Systems, Inc. in Jackson, Mississippi.The deadline for nomination is March 15, 2012.

The MHA Quarter Century Executive Forum was formed 25+ years ago as a special honorary and leadership organization, “in order to recognize contributions made to the Association duringtenure as hospital executives.”All executives with 25 or more years of service can be consideredfor membership in the Forum.

The 2012 candidates will beinducted into the Forum on Wednesday, June 6, 2012, at the MHA Quarter Century Forum’s Reception and Dinner, to be held during the MHA Annual Leadership Conference.If you or executives in your organization are interested in membership, please see the nomination guidelines listed below. Mississippi Healthcare Executives: The Future of Healthcare

The Mississippi Healthcare Executives will be hosting their chapter meeting February 9-10, 2012, at the Mississippi Hospital Association Conference Center in Madison. You do not need to be a member of the chapter to attend this program which addresses current issues in health care.

MHA Plans for 2012 Health Advocacy Day

The Mississippi Hospital Association will host Health Advocacy Day on Tuesday, January 17, 2012, from 10:00 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. This year’s event will take place at the Marriott Hotel in downtown Jackson. MHA is pleased to announce that Governor Phil Bryant is slated to be the keynote speaker!  Speaker of the House Philip Gunn is also scheduled to address the audience before the luncheon. In addition to comments from Governor Bryant and key legislators, MHA staff will give an update on the legislative agenda and advocacy efforts. 

The Mississippi Hospital Association will hold Health Advocacy Day to help bridge a relationship between health care policy and the political process. The event also provides an outlet for Mississippi legislators to share their views about important health care issues with the hospital community. You will not want to miss this year’s meeting, which promises to be a great opportunity for hospital members to network with newly elected officials.

Hospital administrators, members of hospital boards of trustees, senior staff and all other interested parties are strongly encouraged to attend. MHA would also like to encourage members to personally invite their legislators!  It is also important for hospital members  to network with their legislators during the luncheon. Lists of both 2012 House members and 2012 Senate members are attached below.

MHA hosting webinar on executive compensation, goal setting & performance evaluation

Recently, executive compensation has taken on increased visibility due to the new Form 990, heightened media and government scrutiny, and the impact of the economic recession. Hospital boards need to maintain a disciplined annual process for setting management goals and evaluating performance of top leaders while also ensuring executive compensation and benefits are competitive and that processes are compliant with IRS regulations.

On Dec. 14, the Mississippi Hospital Association is hosting a webinar exploring best practices for developing and implementing an executive compensation process that will withstand intense scrutiny and tips for responding to and even preempting media inquiries.

September 21, 2011 - Finding the Money
This webinar will discuss three non-traditional approaches to ensuring hospital survival; monetizing real estate to raise capital for core operations; alternatives to traditional public debt financing; and entering into a merger or acquisition.
  
October 26, 2011 - Industry Consolidation Trends: Mergers, Acquisitions and Joint Ventures
Discussed in this webinar will be the role of the board in major transactions of the hospital, including acquisitions, sales, mergers, consolidations and major joint ventures.  Topics to be included are the board’s duty to assess the business and strategic rationale for the transaction, review and understand the principal terms of the transaction, to ensure appropriate due diligence and review process occurred, to enure the terms of the agreement are commercially reasonable and any compensation being paid is fair market value.
 
November 30, 2011 - Update on Capital Markets
The tax-exempt bond market for healthcare providers including consideration of market access, bond ratings and bond structure will be discussed during this webinar.      

The program is designed for the CEO, CFO, Board Members and other levels of the organization including clinicians, department managers, and executives who are in non-financial positions. The fee is $155 per webinar for MHA members and $275 for non-members. The fee per webinar includes one phone line per site.  Additional phone lines will be billed at the MHA Member/Non-Member rate.
