Over 380 people attended MHA’s 81st Annual Leadership Conference in Point Clear, Ala., held June 7-8 at the Grand Marriott Resort. The conference offered leaders a roadmap of health care at the crossroads. (For all the pics from the conference, click here. In addition to the educational and social opportunities, the conference also recognized individuals for outstanding work in the health care field.
Harry C. Frye, MD, Chairman of the Board at Beacham Memorial Hospital in Magnolia, was recognized as the MHA Distinguished Trustee of the Year. The award was developed in 1996 to recognize exemplary, dedicated service in hospital governance. This year marks Dr. Frye's 60th year of practicing medicine. He still rounds at the hospital daily.
Honorary members for 2012 were also named during the conference: Arthur C. (Sonny) Kelly of OCH Regional Medical Center, Gerald D. Wages of North Mississippi Health Services, Sister Dorothea Sondgeroth of St. Dominic Health Services, Kurt W. Metzner of Mississippi Baptist Health System, Davis Richards of Health Management Associates, and Wynona Winfield of South Mississippi State Hospital.

During the Leadership Conference, Claude Harbarger, president of St. Dominic Health Systems in Jackson, was named Chairman of the MHA Board of Governors and MHA Solutions. MHA and MHA Solutions 2012-2013 board members were also named.
Lester K. Diamond, FACHE, President/Chief Executive Officer of St. Dominic Hospital, was selected as the recipient of the American College of Healthcare Executives Senior-Level Healthcare Executive Regent's Award. He received his graduate degreen in healthcare administration from the University of Mississippi and has been with St. Dominic's since 1992.
Chip Denton, CEO of Grenada Lake Medical Center, was presented with the American Hospital Association Grassroots Champion Award. He was recognized for his exceptional leadership in garnering grassroots and community support for Mississippi hospitals.
The MHAPAC gave two Most Valuable PAC Player Awards: the Hospital Award was presented to St. Dominic- Jackson Memorial Hospital and the Individual Award went to Fred Hood of Pontotoc Health System. During an MHAPAC Breakfast, 2011 Leaders of the PAC were recognized.
During the conference, the MHAPAC held two significant fundraisers, which included the breakfast and a silent auction. Over $15,000 was raised during the events.
