AHIMA addresses physician queries in guidance for CDI programs

On April 29, AHIMA issued a practice brief, “Guidance for Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) Programs,” which provides an overview of critical elements in establishing, maintaining, or enhancing a CDI program.

In addition to outlining the role of the CDI professional and the typical competencies of those who hold these positions, the practice brief discusses a variety of staffing models, including single discipline models as well as hybrid models.

 

AHIMA also addresses the following aspects of the physician query process:

• Written and template queries
• Query timeliness and interpretation
• Leading versus nonleading queries
• Verbal queries
• Query retention

A Roadmap for National Action on Clinical Decision Support

In an effort to help make clinical decision support (CDS) a regular part of patient care, the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) on Tuesday released a roadmap and critical path.

“A Roadmap for National Action on Clinical Decision Support” provides recommendations and an action plan designed to advance the development, widespread adoption, and value of CDS to improve health and the quality and safety of healthcare delivery. It also includes an overview of the current state and future vision of CDS-enabled healthcare, outlines barriers to broader CDS adoption, and proposes specific solutions to address these barriers.

The critical path offers a focused subset of activities, intended to jump start the work plan by producing important, measurable short-term results, and providing a foundation for longer-term efforts.
