In its latest advisory, the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) seeks to educate patients about "anesthesia awareness", a rare event in which a patient may regain consciousness during surgery.
The practice advisory offers recommendations for reducing anesthesia awareness in four areas:
- preoperative evaluation of the patient’s risk for awareness
- use of equipment checklists
- monitoring depth of anesthesia
- drug selection
