Struggling to find creative ideas for a new project? Spark your creativity by breaking a habit a day, advises Linda Kaplan Thaler, co-author of Bang! Getting Your Message Heard in a Noisy World. "Doing something a new way is exercise for the brain," she tells Kimblery Papa in the Ladies Home Journal (September 2005).
The goal is not to eliminate bad habits, but to shake free of things you do by rote in order to activate fresh thoughts. New experiences create new pathways in your brain to process information. So next time you hit a mental roadblock, Thaler suggests taking a new route to work or switching to a different radio station. "It's not about what habit you break," she says. "It's about getting into the habit of breaking free from your habits."
