The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has released reports evaluating the methodologies for moving to cost-based and severity-adjusted diagnosis related groups for the inpatient prospective payment system.
One report by Research Triangle Institute examines how charge compression affects DRG relative weights. The other report by the RAND Corp. evaluates five options for classifying discharges into severity-adjusted DRGs.
RAND plans to publish a final report by Sept. 1 that will expand on its analysis, evaluate alternative methods to determine DRG relative weights and assess the payment impact of the alternate methodologies. The agency began implementing cost-based DRGs this year, and is considering whether to proceed with severity-adjusted DRGs.
