A final rule displayed March 23 by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services sets forth the requirements transplant centers must meet to participate in the Medicare transplant program. CMS said the rule “moves Medicare transplant programs toward an outcome-focused system.”
All transplant centers that opt to continue in the Medicare program must submit a request for initial approval within 180 days of the rule’s effective date, but will be allowed to continue transplant services and receive payment from Medicare until CMS issues a decision on the request. Once approved, transplant centers would be eligible for re-approval every three years.
