The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices on Feb. 22 voted to recommend expanding routine flu vaccination for children. If approved by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Department of Health and Human Services, the recommended flu vaccination age would be from 6 months to five years old, versus 6-23 months currently. ACIP also recommended expanding routine vaccination for household contacts and out-of-home caregivers of children 24-59 months old. CDC currently recommends vaccination for household contacts and caregivers of children 6-23 months old. The panel said it continues to review new vaccination strategies for improving flu prevention and control, including the possibility of expanding routine flu vaccination recommendations to the entire U.S. population.
