The Citizens’ Health Care Working Group today released for public comment “interim” recommendations for making health care more accessible and affordable for all Americans. Based on input received during public meetings and online, the recommendations call for a public policy that all Americans have access to affordable health care and a “core” benefits package; guaranteed financial protection against high health care costs; development of integrated community health networks; intensified efforts to improve quality of care and efficiency; and new ways to provide and finance palliative care, hospice and other end-of-life services so that people living with advanced incurable conditions have access to them in the environment they choose. Charged by the Medicare Modernization Act with making recommendations to Congress and the president, the group plans to issue final recommendations at the end of September. Comments on the interim recommendations are due by Aug. 31.
