On Thursday, February 22, 2007, the Mississippi Hospital Association will host a trustee orientation and refresher course, Preparing Mississippi Trustees Today to Lead for Tomorrow. The workshop will be held at the Mississippi Hospital Association’s Conference Center in Madison from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.
Ensuring visionary, performance-based leadership is one of the principal challenges of hospital governing boards in today’s turbulent health care world. The ever-changing health care environment requires trustee leadership teams that understand the driving forces of change and their implications on hospitals and health systems. And it requires positive, forward-thinking strategic leaders who consistently exhibit the leadership characteristics essential to governance and organizational success.
This five-hour course will explore the role of hospital trustees in several key areas that define governance success in today’s challenging environment. Using a case study format, the session will focus on a variety of critical trustee requirements and accountabilities.
The course is designed for new trustees who want to advance their individual and board leadership performance potential and more experienced trustees seeking a refresher course on their core roles, responsibilities and accountabilities. Topics to be addressed include: critical issues facing hospitals today, fiduciary responsibility, driving direction, governance accountabilities, quality, the board’s role in medical staff credentialing, the fiscally fit board, making the benefit and value connection and ensuring a strong board/CEO relationship. All attendees will receive the all-new edition of the Mississippi Hospital Association’s Trustee Resource Manual.
The instructor will be Larry Walker, president of The Walker Company, a health care management consulting firm. His company specializes in governance development and leadership retreats for hospitals and health systems.
The cost to attend is $150 for one to three individuals or $125 for more than three registrants from the same organization. Registration will begin at 9:30 a.m. For more information or to register, contact Stacy Bishop at (800) 289-8884, (601) 368-3221 or sbishop@mhanet.org.
