The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services will launch a series of national conference calls on the ICD-10 coding system used to report health care diagnoses and procedures in electronic health care transactions. Beginning with an Oct. 14 conference call for hospital staff, the calls will review considerations for health care providers planning to update to ICD-10 from ICD-9, the coding system currently used in the U.S.
Last month, the Department of Health and Human Services announced a long-awaited proposed rule that would implement the ICD-10 system effective Oct. 1, 2011. Earlier this week, the American Hospital Association issued an advisory to its members analyzing the rule. Information on CMS’ calls, including a slide presentation and how to register, can be found on the agency’s Web site.
