On Saturday, January 25, the Mississippi Healthcare Alliance will host the Central Mississippi Stroke Rollout at St. Dominic Hospital in Jackson.
In Mississippi, most of the specialty physicians, like neurologists, are located in select large medical centers; therefore, access to a stroke specialist is a primary concern in stroke care. Timely intervention in acute ischemic stroke offers significant reductions in neurological deficits and disability. Most community hospitals do not have access to a neurologist and lack the expertise found in a Stroke Center; however, stroke care can be initiated at the rural facility in conjunction with input from a practitioner trained in stroke care, either by telephone or telemedicine. A careful patient history and examination, laboratory analysis, and a head CT can be done at “Stroke-Ready” hospitals, allowing the timely decision to treat the patient with thrombolytic therapy at that hospital before transfer to a “Stroke Center” (“drip-n-ship”) if needed for Neurological, Neurosurgical, or Neurointerventional support.
Please mark your calendar for the first of three MS Stroke System of Care Rollouts scheduled to take place Saturday, January 25, 2014 at St. Dominic Hospital. The goal is to have every hospital and EMS provider within MS Healthcare Alliance’s Central Region represented at this meeting. It will be a half-day of education and information sharing for those dedicated to improving stroke outcomes in Mississippi. CME and CE credit will be issued to medical and EMS attendees.
RSVP no later than January 18. Please return the registration form to Dee Howard at dee.m.howard@gmail.com or mail your registration form to MS Healthcare Alliance, PO Box 4665, Jackson, MS 39296.
