CMS has contracted with quality improvement organizations in each state to provide support and resources to outpatient settings to help implement the CDC’s Core Elements of Outpatient Antibiotic Stewardship. A participation agreement must be submitted to receive this free support.
This video gives a wonderful overview of some forces driving antibiotic-resistance, and why antibiotic stewardship is essential for the future of health and healthcare.
In accordance with the National Action Plan for Combating Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria, the QIN-QIO is equipped to provide antibiotic stewardship training, patient education materials, clinical practice guidelines, data about antibiotic use in your area, and assistance with quality improvement activities. Resources are available to support outpatient settings for 2 years through July 2019. Antibiotic use is also a patient safety issue, contributing to adverse drug events, C. difficile infections, and medication interactions. The QIN-QIO is offering to enhance your organization’s current work to improve safety involving antibiotics and improve patient compliance.
To receive this free support, return the participation agreement attached below by May 31st. Please include a list of your outpatient settings that will participate in this initiative.
Eligible outpatient settings include:
- Emergency departments
- Outpatient clinics
- Physician offices
- Urgent care facilities
- Federally-qualified health centers
- Pharmacy-based clinics
The CDC’s Core Elements of Outpatient Antibiotic Stewardship is the guiding document for this initiative. On pages 32-33 there’s a checklist of activities that satisfy the core elements
