Health care providers hold many roles, including ensuring the safety and well-being of patients that are victims of violence. Providers should be cautious when making reports and disclosing protected health information regarding a patient. It is important that providers are familiar with the procedures and laws related to reporting suspected domestic violence or sexual assault of a patient. Attorney General Jim Hood recently issued a memo to clarify the policies in Mississippi law regarding the circumstances in which health care providers should make reports.
